MTW Blog : A Change in Students - MTW Blog (4/6/11)

added by mtwmanager 407 days ago under FrontPage

By:Shanice         I have read this article, Learning with Disabilities. It is about many students who are at Landmark, which is a two year college for young teens with disabilities or A.D.H.D.  Only 30 percent of students graduate with a  degree. Several  drop out within the first or second semester.  It tells how drop out is a serious matter because at the moment, several students are failing classes. Six percent were only taking noncredit courses, and another sixteen percent of this class was only taking partial credit courses that are based on writing or reading.

I can comprehend with this; one of my most recent middle schools didn’t really help out with certain subjects I was having trouble with.  With my disability I was viewed differently, I was always advocating for myself to be pushed harder or to be helped more.  To this day I am still viewed differently and not taken seriously.  I think people with disabilities shouldn’t be viewed differently or treated differently if students need more support. Students should be able to be open to more options to make them succeed in the future.

Thank you Shanice for your blog. I agree with you on how the world still views our learning disabilities and their perspective on how to treat us. Not very fear! But as we continue to advance our self worth and continue to educate ourselves we also embark in educate others with such points of views. I found myself returning to college after 25 years, took several "evaluating tests" (to establish my learning disabilities), and got several assistance within the college,; (audio reader, extra tutoring, longer time for exams and homework, etc.). I'm a 52 year old and on my last semester for an AA in Pre Law, continuing for a BA and God willing, to Law school. (never too late to educate oneself)
Shanice, It has not been easy! but where there is a will there is a way! Focus on your goals and not on the interference (people that try to place barriers, or give labels). I am sure that you have what it take to go forth in your goals, so go girl! This also goes to every person that reads your blog.
We learn in different ways and we take our time absorbing the lessons of life. This is a talent NOT a disability. :) Theodore Roosevelt said: " It's hard to fail, But it is worse never have tied to succeed." continue forward and much success.
Sincerely,
From Florida to you all :)
