By: Dominica   On Wednesday, April 18th MTW hosted its first documentary screening. We watched Miss Representation. There were nearly 55 men and women who showed up to our event. During the event the audience seemed very engaged in what was going on, showing signs that all were interested and some even a little shocked with what they were seeing. Following thedocumentary was a panel discussion where we discussed the issues raised in the documentary. Questions where taken to discuss the panel's views and perceptions of the movie, and the panel's views on what can be changed to keep the media from having a limited view of women. MTW was represented very well during this event. People who did not know about MTW interested in our mission here and finding out what it is that we seek here...

On Thursday, April 19th MTW visited Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. We had a grand tour of all aspects of the school and all the programs offerings were explained to us. We had the honor of exploring the actual classrooms and seeing what the class sizes could be if we went to the school. The tour guide explained everything very thoroughly and all questions that were asked were answered.

By: Lexi   Here at More Than Words Boston, March was self-efficacy month.  Self-efficacy means that we are working hard, advocating for ourselves, and focusing on our “You” job.  Our “You” job are actions we take to pursue our life-long goal.  This week on Transitions shifts, we participates in a workshop on how to communicate with one another, and how to relieve stress.  One of the activities in the workshop had us try to make a square using a long rope, as perfect as we could, while blindfolded!  My team managed to make a square, but it was difficult because we didn’t know where anyone was standing in the room.  As a team, we were very engaged in this activity—we tried it twice!  The workshop stimulated our...

By: Jarris   Mayor Thomas M. Menino visited More Than Words on Wednesday, March 7.  Although on crutches, the mayor participated in a tour given by the entire youth staff and was fascinated with our business and asked many questions about our organization’s mission and business goals.  Mayor Menino told us stories from his childhood, and told us how he got his start in politics.  Our professional interactions and engaging questions seemed to make a big impact on the mayor.  He seemed impressed that the youth at MTW could run a successful business on our own, and told us that our success was a bright spot for the future of the youth in Boston.  The youth of More Than Words want to thank Mayor Menino for giving us the opportunity to show him what we ...

By: Ederson On February 7th we held our first professional business team meeting at MTW Boston where we all came in dressed professionally with suits and ties that were donated to us from Solutions Wear. We all came together as a team to talk about how we are progressing as a whole. We have five different committees (store, online, marketing, transitions, and business development) and each committee presented two slides with information on their progress. The slides that we presented in the meeting update us on where both the business and our youth team are regarding projected goals for areas such as monthly revenue, incoming donations, attendance at school and work and our team’s grade point average. It was a great experience for us to all dress professionally and practice presenti...

By: Jarris   On February 9, 2012 Steve Schnapp, a popular educator from United for a Fair Economy came and spoke with the MTW transitions team about taxes. Mr. Schnapp provided insight on what taxes actually are, and also broke down the way taxes work. I learned that taxes fall into their own categories such as Medicare and retirement. Taxes paid help people in need when used for social services such as welfare and unemployment benefits. I felt as a team we were really engaged with the material. The discussion stimulated my intellectual curiosity and I was able to ask the questions about taxes that I had always wanted to know. The experience was insightful as well as informative and I'm truly thankful for the experience.

By: Ted & Nathalia For the past several months, the MTW team has been working with the Save That Stuff organization.  Due to the hard work of this organization, MTW has improved in many ways.  Save That Stuff recycles all our books and other items that we cannot resell in the store or online to keep them from ending up in landfills. They donate their time to help us recycle our products and take them to a place where they are most needed. Our business has grown over the years and our supporters are so important to us.  Save That Stuff comes to MTW three times a week to pick up all the recycling. Such a tremendous effort has helped us evolve into a successful & green business. We are grateful to Save That Stuff for all their help as we continue to grow.

By: Ederson  On Tuesday, January 24th The Boston Foundation held a board meeting here at MTW in Boston where we hosted our first professional meeting. It was a great experience for me to represent MTW at the end of the meeting, where I got to tell The Boston Foundation about my life and how I was introduced to MTW while also giving them an overview of the business. It was great to hear the feedback they gave about our store and my presentation.    More Than Words’ Boston Warehouse Bookstore is available to host your next meeting or book club. If you are interested in hosting an event at our location please contact Shannan Smith at ssmith@mtwyouth.org.

By Ted. On Tuesday, January 17th 2012, the MTW transitions team had the chance to go on a site visit to Solutions Wear. Each youth had the chance to get free professional outfits for future job interviews or any professional activity. We had the chance to pick 3 suits along with 3 matching ties and 1 belt, 3 shirts, a coat, and a pair of shoes. The outfits were really wonderful and we had amazing support from the staff at the site, and the youth really appreciated the effort from both MTW and Solutions Wear. We all completely took full advantage of the opportunity we had, and we left with some great clothes to wear for future opportunities!!

As our site visit for December the MTW team visited Skyzone which was located in Hyde Park Skyzone was basically a big room set up with trampolines and borders. Our theme for  this month was Self-Efficacy and this site visit tied into with Self-Efficacy because it was about exersize and being active as a way to cope with stress and be healthy we spent a half an hour there and most of us were shocked with how fatigued we were in such short time. I can tell you from expierience that it was an intense workout and many of us were pretty tired.  I was really surprised in finding how much a great workout it was and how exhausted I was after and waking up the next morning. Not to mention drinking gallons of water. I learned that jumping is a more effective workout rather walk...
