On February 7th we held our first professional business team meeting at MTW Boston where we all came in dressed professionally with suits and ties that were donated to us from Solutions Wear. We all came together as a team to talk about how we are progressing as a whole. We have five different committees (store, online, marketing, transitions, and business development) and each committee presented two slides with information on their progress. The slides that we presented in the meeting update us on where both the business and our youth team are regarding projected goals for areas such as monthly revenue, incoming donations, attendance at school and work and our team’s grade point average. On February 9, 2012 Steve Schnapp, a popular educator from United for a Fair Economy came and spoke with the MTW transitions team about taxes. Mr. Schnapp provided insight on what taxes actually are, and also broke down the way taxes work. I learned that taxes fall into their own categories such as Medicare and retirement. Taxes paid help people in need when used for social services such as welfare and unemployment benefits. I felt as a team we were really engaged with the material. The discussion stimulated my intellectual curiosity and I was able to ask the questions about taxes that I had always wanted to know. The experience was insightful as well as informative and I'm truly thankful for the experience.

For the past several months, the MTW team has been working with the Save That Stuff organization. Due to the hard work of this organization, MTW has improved in many ways. Save That Stuff recycles all our books and other items that we cannot resell in the store or online to keep them from ending up in landfills. They donate their time to help us recycle our products and take them to a place where they are most needed. Our business has grown over the years and our supporters are so important to us. Save That Stuff comes to MTW three times a week to pick up all the recycling. Such a tremendous effort has helped us evolve into a successful & green business. We are grateful to Save That Stuff for all their help as we continue to grow.

On Tuesday, January 24th The Boston Foundation held a board meeting here at MTW in Boston where we hosted our first professional meeting. It was a great experience for me to represent MTW at the end of the meeting, where I got to tell The Boston Foundation about my life and how I was introduced to MTW while also giving them an overview of the business. It was great to hear the feedback they gave about our store and my presentation.
More Than Words’ Boston Warehouse Bookstore is available to host your next meeting or book club. If you are interested in hosting an event at our location please contact Shannan Smith at ssmith@mtwyouth.org.
