Volunteer Opportunities

Want to become involved by Volunteering?

Weekly or biweekly (*We ask that anyone interested in being a regular, weekly, or biweekly volunteer submit a cover letter and resume.)

•  The Book Lover - Work alongside youth to help manage the on-line and retail bookselling (sorting and entering books, filling orders, managing the storefront)

• Education Coach – Support youth, weekly, on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6-8:30pm. Education Coaches help youth achieve a GED or HS Diploma, conduct mock interviews, and/or help facilitate professional development workshops.

• Administrative Support – support the MTW management team and business by helping with administrate activities such as building press packets, organizing annual appeals and data entry.

• Book Sourcing Champion - work alongside the youth book sourcing team to organize and coordinate book drives to support the bookstore and online book selling business.

• MTW Brand Ambassador - Spread the news about More Than Words. If you believe in our mission and want to get the More Than Words message out there to the public this is the opportunity for your group!  We’ll train and brief you and provide you with the tools you need to help communicate our vibrant and dynamic image.

Monthly/Group

• Boston Cares - Work alongside our youth team and volunteers from Boston Cares in a monthly special event in the store.

• Host a book drive - Already have a book collection location in mind?  Book drives are another way for you to engage your group or organization to donate books at a location of your choice. 

• Middle School/High School/University Campus Challenge – Do you want to challenge another class or group on campus to a "Beyond Book Drive" drive challenge?  The campus challenge might be just what you are looking for to give back to your community.

One time or periodically

• Mock Interviewers - MTW is looking for volunteers in order to provide our youth with a mock interview experience. Volunteers should have some experience in giving interviews and should be ready to give our youth the critical feedback they need to hear in order to improve their interview skills. MTW will provide you with sample questions and a rubric to use during the interview and to review with youth at the end. Mock Interviews will be held at More Than Words and last on average 45 minutes. The following are two different opportunities we have for volunteers:
  
  
  • Monthly Volunteer - this person will commit to providing pre-scheduled youth with mock interviews once a month on either a Tuesday or a Thursday for 1 1/2 hours, thus seeing 2 youth over the course of an evening during a Transitions shift. The first mock interview will begin at 6:30 and the second at 7:15.
  • Volunteer at Will - MTW is building a group of volunteers who are interested in giving mock interviews for alumni on an as needed basis, as their schedule allows. We often have youth who are scheduled for interviews with only a few days advance notice and would like a practice interview. Volunteers would be called on an as-needed basis with the understanding that their schedule may or may not allow them to support scheduling a mock interview. Alumni are often at MTW on Mondays for Transitions support from 3-6pm, which would be an ideal window for mock interviews, though additional times can be scheduled as the youth need arises.

• Coordinate a Community Book Drive - Collect books, CD's, DVD's and Video Games for the store at your work place or faith community (all of the books, CD's, DVD's and Video Games we sell are donated by members of the community)

• Transitions Volunteers: (Volunteers that work with our youth on hitting outcomes in education, employment, and self-efficacy.)

  • Provide a service or workshop - facilitate a workshop for youth in your area of expertise (e.g. interviewing, financial literacy, study skills, web design or marketing)

• Help us connect - Help put us in touch with community resources or potential employers. Host a group of youth for a site visit, tour, or shadow day at your place of business or campus to help youth gain critical exposure as they plan for their futures.
